小泉純一郎元首相は２５日、１９８９年１月７日の昭和天皇逝去を受け、当時厚相として出席した臨時閣議で提案された三つの元号のうち、出典の説明があったのは「平成」だけだったと明らかにした。東京都内での講演で語った。政府は従来、元号の選定過程を「極秘扱い」としており、改元に関わった閣僚が公の場で内幕に触れるのは異例。
