人口当たりの修士・博士号取得者が近年、主要国で日本だけ減ったことが、文部科学省科学技術・学術政策研究所の調査で判明した。日本の研究論文の質や量の低下が問題になっているが、大学院に進む若者の数でも「独り負け」で、研究力の衰退を示す結果といえる。
