今月６日未明の北海道地震発生後、道内全域が停電（ブラックアウト）するまでの間、電力需要が急激に高まっていたことが判明した。主力の火力発電所の停止で供給が大幅に落ち込むだけでなく、需要も急増したことで、強制的な停電などで需給バランスを取ることが困難になり、ブラックアウトを引き起こした可能性がある。
